Your anecdotal report is quite consistent with that of other attempts at combining identical antennas aimed in different directions.
Low gain & poor multipath rejection.
Disappointing to hear that the build quality is also poor.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
