I chose to bury about 40' of #6 copper when I drove a new ground rod out by my garage where the mast is located. I hope it's a complete waste of money - never needed.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
