Rain and dust can absorb RF. It sounds like you're quite close to the edge on a good day... bad weather can be the straw the stomps on my cats' tail. (I don't have a camel.)

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
