Looking for an antenna recommendation?

There is an existing antenna on the roof. It does not provide signal better than an indoor TERK antenna (from Radio Shack) .
Its an old house, so is there something wrong with the coax wiring? It appears to run through the attic and then down to the living room behind the wall.
Is there a way to test signal strength of coax (ie a multimeter..) ?
(I dont mind changing the antenna, but changing the wiring would be difficult.) How should I proceed?
