You need to confirm that there is no water in the coax. If there is, it often causes trouble for some signals more than others.

When I apply self vulcanizing tape, I also put a couple of layers of regular vinyl electrical tape over the sealing tape. The idea is to keep dirt from sticking, block UV rays and by stretching the vinyl tape as it's applied, compress the sealing tape... adding certainty that it fully seals by bonding to itself and the parts under it.
