Which mounting option is best... you'll need to try both to know for sure.
In the winter with all the leaves off the tree, I'll bet a cup of coffee on the shot through the tree.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
