Your friend does not sound like a hardcore DX hobbyist. If she is, she will need some extraordinary antennas.

If she wants to receive the major networks, go with a Winegard HD7694, or the Antenna craft HBU-33 or 44. Given the trees, I'd err on the large side to be safe. There should be no need for amplification if there are only two sets. Too big an antenna, and you may have a hard time splitting the aim between the FOX station and the rest.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
