Looking for help in San Diego

Moving into a new construction townhome with three stories. From what I can tell, the signal strength is pretty strong for the channels I care about, just the major networks. Our place is three stories, so the plan is to mount an indoor antenna on the third floor and split for two tvs, one next to the antenna and another on the first floor, so maybe a 50 foot coax run.

Questions:

1. Would I be fine with a fairly cheap and simple antenna? Anyone in particular you would recommend.
2. The transmitters are in two main locations almost 180 degrees from each other. Given this situation, would getting a dipole antenna actually be preferable to getting a multidirectional?
3. I have two main mounting options: either right inside a window or up in the attic. The difference in height would only be about 6 feet, but the attic would require a longer cable run. Is one better than the other?

Thanks for any help that can be provided!

The Winegard HD-1080 has a VHF pattern that is backwards from the UHF pattern. For most that is a flaw, but for you it's a lucky advantage because the VHF stations are opposite your UHF channels. I'd give it an excellent chance of working in the attic.

As a start.

Install a , http://www.antennacraft.net.

HBU33 antenna in the attic , aimed at about 150 degree magnetic compass direction.

Here is how to aim antennas , http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointing/pointing.html.

Use a Real and Actual magnetic compass to aim antenna , do not trust a cell phone , tablet and etc. compass.

--------------

For 1 or 2 Tv's connected a antenna system amplifier will most likely not be required.

-------------

If reception is weak signal strength on some Tv stations such as and not limited to , XHDTV-D , MyNetwork.

-------------

Then install a http://www.antennacraft.net.

10G201 preamplifier.

-------------

For 1 Tv connected use No splitter.

For 2 Tv's connected use a , Holland Electronics , HFS-2D , 2 way splitter.

For 3 Tv's connected use a , Holland Electronics , HFS-3D , 3 way splitter.

Buy the , HFS-2D , HFS-3D , splitters at , http://www.hollandelectronics.com

or

http://www.amazon.com.

-------------

If reception situations happen in the attic that are not resolvable with antenna aim and location adjustments in the attic.

Then move the HBU33 antenna and preamp unit to Above the Peak of the Roof in such a manner that reception is not , impeded , obstructed , blocked , by the , attic , roof , building , in the directions of , North East , East , South East , West North West.

-------------

Here are some above the roof antenna mounts.

http://www.ronard.com/909911.html.
Use the , ronard (911) , 5 foot tripod antenna mount.

http://www.ronard.com/34424560.html.
Use the , ronard (4560) , eave antenna mount.

http://www.ronard.com/ychim.html.
Measure around the chimney and use a , ronard (2212) , ronard (2218) , ronard (22240 .

------------

Above the roof , aim the HBU33 antenna at 150 degree magnetic compass direction.

------------

As always , trees and tree leaves , plants and plant leaves , have a Negative Effect , on Broadcast Tv Reception , and so do buildings and other obstructions including your own , attic , roof , building.

Some and not all , Negative Effects are.

Absorbing and Blocking Reception.

Multi-Path Reflecting Tv Signals Bouncing All Around.

The Best Practice for Reliable Reception is to install the antenna at a location that has the least amount to no amount of obstructions of any type or kind in the directions of reception including your own , attic , roof , building , in the directions of reception.
