Cutting cable in Derry NH
 

Hello,

I've finally had enough of Comcast and want to cut my cable. I do not have an existing antenna (or knowledge about selecting/installing them).

I ran the TV Fool signal analysis:

I'm only interested in the signals in the green and yellow areas (rows 1-17, excluding W33AK and W39AR).

Can I really use an indoor antenna to get the signals in green? These are almost all 40+ miles away! If so, what would be the 'best' indoor antenna to try?

Yes an indoor antenna could work for you. Having the TV near a south facing wall or window would help. Less building material for the signal to penetrate that way. Hopefully your house isn't sided with metal or stucco which would degrade the signal greatly. Are there any large obstacles like tall buildings or trees south of you. Are you trying to feed more than one TV?

Indoor antennas can work, but are very fussy.

If you have access to the attic, consider a DB-2 or DB-4 aimed at Boston and a Y5-7-13 aimed at WMUR. Add them together with a UVSJ. They would be even better outside using an eave mount.

No large buildings near me (it's a rural area), only one set to feed the signal too and 10 year old 2nd floor addition - wood frame and vinal siding. As to trees, the house is surrounded by 'em.

"Surrounded by trees" means more signal loss especially when in full leaf. I agree with Tower Guy's attic or outdoor roof mount suggestion. If you have no interest in stations to the north, in particular WMUR and WENH which are VHF, you could go with one UHF only antenna pointed south.

You may be able to take advantage of the existing coaxial cable in your house if it's already in the attic or if the coax entrance point outside the house would allow an outdoor antenna a good view to the south.

If the indoor antenna does not quite provide the reception. Then this recommendation of improved reception and more digital stations/channels is based on the Pending Applications Included of tvfool radar map as of 01-27-2012. To reach out for , WVBK-CA 2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WVBK-CA , install a Winegard YA6260 low band antenna aimed at about 289 degree magnetic compass. Also install a Winegard YA1713 high band antenna aimed at about 18 degree magnetic compass for the reception of WENH-TV 11 PBS New Hampshire PBS. The YA6260 and YA1713 are combined with a Holland Electronics HLSJ diplexer , and the output of the diplexer is connected to the VHF input of a Winegard AP2870 preamp. . For the reception of a large number of UHF tv stations/channels to the south , install a Winegard HD9032 UHF antenna aimed at about 200 degree magnetic compass. Connect the HD9032 UHF antenna to the UHF input of the AP2870 preamp. Also can try for reception of both , WENH 11 PBS and WMUR-TV 9 ABC by aiming the YA1713 at about 340 degree magnetic compass. If you decide to not reach out for WVBK , you can omit the YA6260 low band antenna and the HLSJ and connect the YA1713 directly to the VHF input of the AP2870 preamp.
