Reception/Antenna help Cary, NC
 

Hi,

Looking for some help/validation of a potential roof mounted antenna to replace my existing attic antenna. I live in Cary, NC and from reviewing the TVFool signal analysis report it looks like the majority of the TV stations are in an ESE direction with a few others in WNW.

One of our neighbors has a Winegard Flatwave FL6550A and is happy with it. I was therefore going to also buy the Flatwave or a Marathon HDTV antenna. Before I buy one I thought I'd reach out to the forum for feedback/recommendations. I would rather not have multiple directional antennas etc if possible from an aesthetics perspective.

The antenna would be mounted on an East facing (99 deg magnetic) roof and would be around 25 to 30' above ground level. There is a treeline about 40 foot away from the house that would be between the anteena and the tower. The trees are higher than the house.

I currently have an AmazonBasics Ultra-Thin Amplified Indoor HDTV Antenna - 50 Mile Range (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DIFIP06) in the attic. I have a passive 2-way splitter, although I plan to replace this with a 3 or 4-way splitter so I can feed 3-4 TVs.

Below I have listed whether I currently am able to receive the channel using my Amazon Basics antenna in the attic. The order of the stations matches the TVFool report:

WTNC 40 - Sometimes Receive

Where I state 'Sometimes Receive' or 'Usually Receive' it means that depending on how I position the current antenna and/or the time of day/weather I have been able to receive the channel.

I would like to have a solution that consistently receives:
ABC
CBS
CW
Fox
MyN
NBC
PBS

All the networks you want are available from the ESE.

The trees in the signal path are a wild card. Try a Winegard HD7694P antenna without a preamp, with just one TV. Then, add the splitter. If the signals become too weak, replace the passive splitter with a CM3414 distribution amp.

If the antenna is outside, the coax shield should be grounded with a grounding block that is connected to the house electrical system ground with 10 gauge copper wire for electrical safety and to reject interference. For further compliance with the electrical code (NEC), the mast should also be grounded in a similar manner to drain any buildup of static charge which will tend to discourage a strike, but the system will not survive a direct strike.

If you have a problem with WTVD ABC on real channel 11, you might have FM interference.
