Antenna Selection Help

Greetings,

I would like to cut the cord on cable and install a new Outdoor Antenna for my house. I do not have restrictions on the size of the antenna. It will be mounted from a pole on my chimney.

Here is my TV Analysis: http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...13492868954d70

I would like to get an antenna that might be able to pick up ABC in our area. We do live in the mountains and that signal is the weakest. Thanks.

You're exactly on the wrong side of Poor Mountain to easily get WSET. Even their channel 5 translator is likely not available to you. You'll likely need a very large high-VHF antenna just for that one station while the rest of your Roanoke locals should be easy (low-VHF + UHF).

There are several ways to approach the challenge:

1) Go with a large all-channel antenna that has sufficient reception for WSET. It will be overkill for the Poor Mountain stations, but it should work well. Add a rotor to explore reception in other directions if desired. This will maximize overall reception.

2) IF Roanoake-only is okay, then install two antennas - a small all channel for everything except WSET plus a large high-VHF antenna combined with a channel 13 Jointenna or similar.

Much depends on what your over-all goal might be.

Use a Winegard HD7698P and a Channel Master 9521A rotor. This will receive WSET 13 and all of the UHF and High VHF stations from Roanoke. Dont use a Pre-amplifier. If you are connecting more than 3 sets you should consider using a distribution amplifier.

Test run the rotor on the ground using a short three conductor cable. Leave it at the counter clockwise end of rotation. Install with the antenna pointed to 0 degrees magnetic. you will be able to use the 360 degree display to locate many channels.

Your location has receivable Tv stations/channels in ALL 3 Tv Bands , VHF low band channels 2 thru 6 , VHF high band channels 7 thru 13 , UHF band channels 14 thru 51.

The HD7698P antenna Is Not a all channel antenna.

Install a Winegard HD8200U All Channel antenna.

No antenna rotor is required , For reception of All the Networks and more including WSET ABC install a Winegard HD8200U antenna aimed at about 77 degree magnetic compass.

The Tv/s Must scan for the Broadcast Tv channels some times named the 'Air Channels' or 'Antenna Channels' in the Tv set up menu because the Tv transmissions travel through the air from the transmitting antenna to the receiving antenna.

DO NOT scan for cable tv channels.

The 8200 is a very large antenna and would only be needed if you want to receive PBS channel 3.

If size is not an issue, the 8200 is a very good all channel antenna.

Thats why I recommend a ALL Channel Antenna , WBRA-DT Real Channel 3 PBS is transmitting on channel 3.

And the large ALL Channel Antenna Will Provide Reliable reception of WSET ABC.
