ok so heres the deal my wife really wants ion a channel just under 81 miles to my southeast.from going through the maps dont look good.will buils anything necessary to do it.is it even possible?
i can get an amp if needed cant get that much more height though as the tower is 25 foot with a 5 foot mast.i have a sbgh without reflector pulling channels up to 50 miles to the northwest.it wont pull this channel when i turn it southeast.so would dbgh do it or m8 or should i look into building some array of multiple antennas.any help would be greatly appriciated

Hello Pips,

It indeed doesn't look good.

Try rerunning your plots at 50', 100' and for giggles 250'.

As it stands this is an extreme measures type of signal. After you post the additional heights we can discuss more.

There is improvement, but to really see it you have to get above 100'. Likely not an option for you at these heights.

In this situation someone might as an extreme measure gang 2 or 4 Antennas Direct 91xgs. There are some folks on the site who know about about this. I've never attempted it as I have a single 91xg.

The questions becomes at 25' with a -12.2 db signal can you generate enough gain to get it decodable levels? The way I see it you need to get 20+ db of gain out of the ganged antennas to have a chance.

Then there are some adjacents and even a co-channel inference issue to contend with on RF 39.

It may be fun to build the array and it may work well, but this ION signal will require much luck and extreme measures.

Another option might be a Slingbox Pro HD? It allows you to stream over the air signals via a TV tuner over the internet. In this case setting it up at a relatives house who has a much stronger ION station to where you could plunk down a HBU11, might be cheaper. :)

i had a coolsat unit a few years ago and seemed like every week it was getting hit and i would have to hook up to computer and get new codes.has there tech improved since then or is it still the same

I have no experience with C-band FTA, but there are people on the forum at http://www.satelliteguys.us/ that could tell you what would be involved in getting ion. From reception charts it looks like ion is available in the clear from 103.

I am guessing, but to me it seems easier to put up a big dish than to put up a 100 mast or tower for one channel.

As a Test of reception , starting a 50 feet antenna height above ground.

Install a , Antennas Direct , DB8e , UHF channels 14 thru 51 antenna.

Aimed at about 181 degree magnetic compass direction.

Use a Real and Actual magnetic compass to aim antenna , do not trust a , cell phone , tablet and etc. compass.

As always a antenna aim direction and location can be adjusted for best reception.

Most Digital Tv's have a Signal Strength Meter and some Digital Tv's also have a Signal Quality Meter.

Locate the DB8e antenna so as to Avoid aiming the DB8e antenna into trees and tree leaves and other obstructions. The signal strength is Weak so do not make the signal even weaker.

The clearer the path to the transmitter the better reception will be.

The Only Way to find out if Reliable reception will happen is to install the antenna Up High and see what happens.

I think reliable reception will happen , however the only way to find out is.

The DB8e is installed as a dedicated antenna to receive ION Networks.

And Other Tv stations will also be received also.
