More new Free To air TV band!!
 

I just found out that there will be a very first ever U.S. FTA DBS services, and it will be in the lower KU band 11.7 GHz to 12.2 GHz!!

That's really cool. You can do a lot with 500 MHz of spectrum. It's good for satellite receivers, since the frequency is so high it requires line-of-sight. I wonder why more hasn't been mentioned about this? This is the first time I've heard of this.

FTA Free To Air
 

FTA has been available for the USA for several years now and is Common around the rest of the world for many years. http://www.ftalist.com/ is one of many web sites that have been on the web for several years. There is a whole culture of FTA people , with forums to join in. Americans tend to think that they have found something that only they know about and is new. I have been putting information on FTA , across the internet for several years now.

Thanks for the link. I'm aware of FTA satellite, just didn't think there was anything still worth watching on there. It seems to be just televangelists and informercials. Pretty much any content worth watching is encrypted.

I remember growing up with a friend who lived deep within the forest, far beyond the range of cable, and had a BUD in his backyard. He could see everything, including TV newscasts "behind the scenes" during commercial breaks! That was fun to watch. You'd see the news anchors picking their nose, flirting with each other, unaware that the camera was still on.

Unfortunately, as we know, encryption pretty much killed that, after the 1980's. With the rise of DirecTV and Dish Network on smaller dishes, there was no more use for a BUD. That was the extent of my experience with FTA.
