Antenna/Equipment Recommendations in Michigan

Moving into a new construction home and looking to cut the cord. I would like to have the antenna in the attic, I had coax ran and an outlet installed in the attic (for a potential pre-amp) more than enough room up there, but I'm now limited to accessing through normal sized access panels.

I've read things about the ClearStream 4, but I have no idea on possible antenna choices.

The coax runs from the attic to the basement (i'm guessing 30ft.) distribution/termination box. I would like to feed 3 tv's from there. Do I need a pre-amp or a distribution amplifier?

Start with a Antenna Craft HBU44 antenna in the attic aimed at about 130 degree magnetic compass direction.

Use a Real and Actual magnetic compass to aim antenna.

Install a Winegard LNA-100 'Boost' antenna system amplifier.

If reception situations/issues are happening that are not resolvable by adjusting aim and location of the HBU44 antenna in the attic then move the HBU44 antenna to above the peak of the roof.

The tvfool report is showing that 2 Local reception Canada Digital Broadcast Tv stations/channels are receivable at your location.

CBET-DT channel 9 , The CBC.

CICO-DT channel 32 , TVO , Canada's PBS.

The Canada Tv stations are Weak signal strength.

If the Canada Tv stations are not received with the HBU44 antenna in the attic then move the HBU44 antenna to above the peak of the roof.

The HBU44 antenna is aimed at about 130 degree magnetic compass direction.

You mentioned possibly raising the antenna above the roof peak, our HOA doesn't permit aerial antenna's other than sat dishs. So this will have to stay in the attic. I would LOVE to pull in CBC 9 for hockey games.

Is there a solution that can help without mounting on the roof?

Also, I should have mentioned that the 3 tv's runs from the distribution box are probably 30-50 ft each, even though it's a 30ft run from the attic to the box.

Will that booster be enough to split the signal 3 ways?

Your HOA is likely aware of the FCC OTARD rules, and hopes you are not. The FCC rules over-rule HOAs and local government laws that would prevent you from installing and using an antenna for TV reception. The rules limit the size of satellite antennas but not TV antennas. The rules also protect installations that rise as high as 12' above the peak of your roof.

For reception of CBET, real CH-9, I would consider a dedicated Antennacraft Y10713 (mounted on my roof with no shame) and secondary tuner. http://forum.tvfool.com/showthread.php?t=2882

The Federal Antenna Law says Yes you can install a Broadcast Tv Antenna of any size above the roof and location above the roof so as to have reliable reception.

The HBU44 antenna above the roof should receive the Canada Tv stations.

If required , a second antenna can be added.

I do not think a second antenna will be required.

It is interesting , seams like the Federal Antenna Law is known to every one but the people that the law is for to protect and provide the legal right to install Tv antennas so as to have reliable reception.

Hoa's , Housing covenuts , and etc. all know about the Federal Antenna Law.

I think I'm going to try it out in the attic first. Would I plug the Winegard Boost in at the antenna, or in the basement at before a splitter?

Amplifiers 'push' signal further down the line. They don't 'pull' signal from the antenna or the air. So, place the amplifier close to the antenna.

If there is any chance you may need/choose to move the system outside, consider the LNA-100 to be an indoor only product. If there's a chance you'll need an outdoor rated preamplifier, consider the RCA TVPRAMP1R.

Practical and Usefull Information.
 

Most attics have electric outlet power.

The LNA-100 can be installed in the attic.

It is best to install a amplifier ->closer<- to the antenna , not further from the antenna.
