Attic vs Roof mount

Can anyone detail the effect on reception I should expect in an attic vs roof mount? I have a 2 story wood frame house with asphalt shingles.

Also what effect should be expected from having a wooden beam near the antenna given various distances from 1 to 10 feet?

Thanks!
Mark

You have described three of my four antennas. My practical experience is that wet asphalt shingles absorb quite a bit more signal than the same when dry. Wet snow is even worse.

To be safe, subtract 15 to 25 dB from your NM (noise margin). What to do with NM

I am reliably receiving signals with predicted NM's of 33 to 72 dB using attic mounted antennas. The fourth antenna, outside, is my only hope for reliable reception of the weaker signals.

GroundUrMast,
Thank you! you gave exactly the kind of answer I was looking for.

In your reply you mention having multiple antennas. Do you use some kind of switch to select between antennas?

I use network attached tuners.
