I am new to OTA, and need help with antenna and installation. I am in an area with tall pine trees, and far away from stations. Here is my page from TVFool.com:

http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3d99001883c7dbd9

What is the best antenna for me, and who can install it? Does it have to be on a tall poll?

How does one deal with lightening with these antenna? Are they grounded?

Thank you for all your help.

The tall pine trees are , in your yard , the neighbors yard , or how far away??

The tall pine trees are thick and dense stands of pine trees or not many pine trees??

Your receivable Tv stations/channels are to the north west and west.

The tall pine trees are what directions??

How many Tv's are/will be connected??

The tall pines are over 50 ft from the house on the north and northeast, and are not very dense on that side. They are in a vacant lot next to mine.

The trees on the west are closer to the house at about 25-30 feet from the house. They are smaller trees with only three or four that are older trees. They are in my yard. It is not solid trees, but they are scattered over a long narrow yard of over 2 acres. There is somewhat of a clearing to the west northwest.

There will be one TV and possibly 2 at the most.

I appreciate any help you can give.

Install a Antennas Direct DB4e antenna Above the roof aimed at about 310 degree magnetic compass.

Here is how to aim antennas , http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointing/pointing.html.

Here are some antenna mounts , http://www.ronard.com/909911.html , http://www.ronard.com/34424560.html , http://www.ronard.com/ychim.html , http://www.ronard.com.

Buy the ronard antenna mounts at solidsignal by typing the word ronard in the solidsignal search box.

Here are some places to buy antennas and etc. , http://www.solidsignal.com , http://www.antennasdirect.com , http://www.amazon.com.

The Tv's Must Channel Scan for the Digital Broadcast Tv Channels sometimes named the 'Air Channel' or 'Antenna Channels' in the Tv setup menu because the Tv transmissions travel through the air from the transmitting antenna to the receiving antenna.

DO NOT channel scan for cable tv channels.

Ground the antenna mount/mast with # 8 or #10 solid copper ground wire.

Ground the coax with a coax ground block. Type , GB-8100 in the solidsignal search box.

The best place to ground is at electric service ground outside the house.

All manner of clamps for grounding are at Home Depot and Lowes and Menards.

For an installer , look into these. and I am gun shy on recommending these.

There are so many people out there that do not have clue one of what they are doing.

http://www.angieslist.com.

http://www.servicemagic.com.

Also type in these words in the google search box --> structured wiring naples florida.

Several web sites will pop up call the business and explain what you want done.

Do not contact dennyantennaservice they are only interested in selling you thier antennas.

WOW Teleview! There is so much here to study. I have no idea how high to mount this. Do you think that attaching it to the roof like this link would be high enough?

http://www.ronard.com/34424560.html

I have seen a pole like #7772 in my area, but I'd rather not have to go to that trouble. My directv is on a pole that is about 5 ft tall, and faces the house on the north side. I really want to divorce myself from directv. That's why I want an antenna.

Thank you for all of your great suggestions.

I'm not sure I understand 310 magnetic compass. I'm not sure which direction to aim the antenna toward.

My roof is tile, and only one story. I don't know about it's construction as I just moved here. I don't know if there is metal inside. There is no solar on the roof.

As long as I don't have to worry about lightening hitting I think outside might be better.

How far do I have to be away from trees? Does the antenna have to have a large clearing from the trees?

Glad to know I don't need a tall pole. I don't relish the thought of being a monkey.

Early on you indicated that there is clearing of trees to the north/west , the Tv stations are to the west north west.

Yes use the eave antenna mount.

Get the antenna above the roof so that the antenna clears the roof and has good a view to the north west as possible.

There is no requirement to put the antenna in a place that you will be swinging around like a monkey , keep it simple.

Do you know your directions??

North.

East.

South.

West.

And then back to north.

North = 0 degree magnetic compass.

East = 90 degree magnetic compass.

South = 180 degree magnetic compass,

West = 270 degree magnetic compass.

And then you come 360 degree , when you are at 360 degree you are nose to nose with 0 degree and 0 degree is magnetic compass north.

So 310 degree is in between , 270 and 360 degree.

So in general terms , one could say that 310 degree is west/north. Or west moving toward north.

I have found that knowing the directions of ,

North.

East.

South.

West.

and back to North.

Makes it easier for me to get along in life.

So the DB4e is aimed in the general direction of north/west. Or west / north.

For 1 Tv connected use no splitter.

For 2 Tv's connected use a common simple 2 way splitter.

Yes, I know my directions. This is very helpful. I see now. It's just a circle. 310 is about where there is a cluster of small pine trees, but they are about 30-40 feet from the house. I am on a flat lot. Will the trees be a problem? They are about 25 feet tall. Is the DB4e the antenna that I should use?

Yes the DB4e is the antenna to use , I had confused you with another question asker , (a very rare event).
It is the talk of the Pine trees that through me off , got me to thinking about Oregon.
I reread my posts so I can clarify the information. I removed that bit information that does not apply to your reception situation.

The reception will be Ok.

From what you describe the trees are not that dense to the west north and become less trees to the north west.

And that direction is where the group of Tv transmitters is at.

Go to the tvfool radar plot report and click on the , Pending Applications Included , Only Digital.

You will see that the main group of receivable Tv transmitters is to the north/west.

And there is one Tv transmitter off to the west , WYDT-CA channel 26.

The programing is , Tach Tv a hot rod car channel and Weather Nation a weather channel.

The 310 degree aim direction is a in between aim direction between the main group of Tv transmitters to the north west and WYDT to the west.
