Hi Everyone.

We are currently using a midsize VHF/UHF antenna, that was on the tower when we bought our house 15 years ago. It may be 30 years old, but I have replaced the coax a few years back. I think it is a Radio Shack unit, complete with a Radio Shack preamp. The tower with mast and rotator is about 30 feet, the coax run is about 40 ft of good quality RG59, with a two split , the second for FM radio. Currently we are pointed around 160 degrees. We try not to use the rotator, as finding the sweet spot can be difficult.

We get 4.1, 5.1, 7.1, 9.1, 11.1, 19.1, 23.1, 25.1, 41.1, 47.1, 57.1, 66.1, and 69.1 pretty much rock solid. 2.1, 17.1, 29.1 and 49.1 we get most of the time. 51.1 comes in seldom. We can get 10.1, and 13.1, but it requires moving the rotator.

I am thinking of replacing this with a DB8, with good quality RG6 cable, without a preamp at all, as the cable run is short. If FM reception is poor, I would likely put up a dedicated FM antenna, with its own cable and eliminate the splitter loss. We may even get good enough FM with rabbit ears.

Does this sound like a good idea? Will the DB8 still get CFTO and CKVR? Might the beam width be wide enough to get the Toronto, Buffalo, and maybe 13.1 from Kitchener without moving the rotator? Should I plan on putting up a CM 7777 preamp?

Really just looking too make reception a little more solid. Thanks in advance.

Ok this is based on digital channels in the pending applications included. I recommend a 2 antenna solution , First antenna Winegard YA1713 with a Antennas Direct CPA-19 preamp , aimed at CKCO-DT 13 CTV , 238 degree magnetic compass. The YA1713 purpose is to reach in and lift CKCO out of the soup. The CPA-19 will get the signal to the tv to make CKCO reliable reception.

The second antenna is a Winegard HD7698P , http://www.canadapost.ca/shopper/items/3621945/WINEGARD-HDTV-HIGH-BAND-HD7698P?local=en , with a Antennas Direct CPA-19 preamp. Aimed at about 160 degree magnetic compass. The coaxes from each antenna will be and stay separate and go all the way to the tv location where the separate antenna coaxes will connect to a remote control A/B antenna switch , model AB27RS , and the output of the A/B switch will connect to the tv.

CKVR-DT 10 is a strong digital station and will be received through the back side of each antenna and thats ok. There will be some over lapping of the tv stations receptions with the antennas and thats ok. The tv stations are spread too far apart to receive with one antenna with out a rotor , so that is why 2 antennas. Here is how to aim antennas , http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointing/pointing.html. Hi John, thanks for the advice.

If I choose to continue using the rotator, would you still recommend the 7698 with the preamp. Just trying to keep the tower loading down a bit.

If a smaller antenna is used , like a Winegard HD7694P antenna , then the USA stations , WNED 43 PBS , WIVB 39 CBS , WUTV 14 14 FOX will likley not be received. It is your choice , you can try the HD7694P and see what happens.
