Just looking to pick up the Milwaukee stations to the south.I don't feel brave enough to crawl up my fairly steep roof anymore so I have to ask my brother:o
I have tried a $30 plastic and aluminum antenna I found on amazon. I held it against the ceiling in the upstairs bedroom on the south side of the house.
Direct to the converter it only picked up 2 channels, but when I added the amp that came with it, I seemed to get most or all of the Milw stations. I do not plan to use a rotor if I have to put an antenna on the roof, but if I could get decent results I would prefer an attic location. I plan to feed to 4 locations, but would rarely use more then 1 TV and 1 PC DVR at a time.
Roof top antenna needs to be durable, attic antenna needs to be smaller to avoid electric wiring.

I recommend a Winegard HD7084P antenna and a Channelmaster CM3414 four way distribution amplifier. Mount the antenna on the roof with a Strong and Strudy antenna mount such as , tripod mount , chimney mount , peak of the roof eave mount. There is no requirement or advantage in using such a large, ungainly, and more expensive antenna for channels 2-69.

For Milwaukee stations, you have two basic options and must select one before proceeding. Milwaukee's stations ALL broadcast on UHF channels except for one of the two PBS outlets, WMVS which transmits on VHF channel 8. If you desire to receive both of the PBS stations, then select a 7-69 antenna or separates. If you can forgo that one station, a UHF-only antenna is the appropriate selection. A UHF-only antenna will likely be less expensive and will be more compact easing installation.

For a UHF-only solution:

If you have a line of sight back towards Milwaukee that is not immediately obstructed by trees or buildings, a simple 4-bay or 3-4 ft UHF Yagi would work fine. There's plenty of signal power to go around for a modest 4 outlet system so a distribution amplifier probably isn't needed (wouldn't hurt anything, but you probably won't need it...). Depending on your roof's construction and attic environment, this setup would likely work in there. I always suggest that folks try the attic first but be prepared to go outside if necessary to achieve additional height and to get out of the multi-path susceptible attic space. I also usually suggest going to the next size antenna in the selected product family. This gives a bit better focus on the primary signal (rejecting some of the in-attic multi-path) and a bit more gain to offset some of the attenuation of the roofing.

If you must have that extra PBS station, then you can either select a short-medium range UHF/high-VHF antenna or you can add a separate high-VHF antenna to the selected UHF antenna.
