First of all I usually pride myself in researching and figuring out projects like this but with a small a business and a small child I'm throwing in the towel and asking for help!

I am in Asheville which is surrounded by mountains but there are none directly around my house. We do have some tall trees to contend with. We have directv and will be cancelling very soon. Even with the tall trees directv gets great reception. Seems there's just enough of a "hole". I have some pics trying to show the tree lines from the roof. I can post them if requested.

Here is my report (antenna height is a rough estimate)

It is a MUST that I incorporate the sat mount with whatever I do! We have a brand new roof and will not be changing the location. Size/aesthetics are of concern to my wife so nothing gigantic.

Here is where the sat is mounted and pointing. Looks like where it is aimed I would get abc and pbs no problem. We would like all major networks if possible (abc has to be 13 for local news) others I don't care where they come from.

I've been looking at a few antennas on amazon that I know I could use with the sat mount.

We currently have 2 tv's setup with directv so there is coax run. One LONG run from the sat around the house and into the basement where it splits. We would like to add another at some point for the guest room. The main tv is actually very close to where the sat is and we could easily run a new shorter run of coax. Then use the old long run for the back two bedrooms. I know nothing about preamps etc.

So the ones in the red circle are all I need. Channel 7 to the right is cbs but it looks like channel 2 is cbs as well. If I use the RCA ANT751 and point it in the middle of everything (where the black arrow is) should I expect to get all these? Again there are trees to contend with.

A not so great pic from the roof where the sat is now pointing showing the trees.

The 751 *might* work. Trees will be your greatest problem. The second and third antennas on your list are both unlikely to work, scratch them.

WLOS should be relatively easy to get since VHF is affected much less than UHF by foliage. WSPA, likewise, has a decent shot at reception. Aim the antenna due south and see if you can get both.

Everything else is going to be a crap shoot when the leaves are on the trees. Your mileage WILL vary.

Thanks! I'm willing to spend a little more $ if there is something better that fits these

Wife won't budge on the above ;)

Neither will the trees.

I hear ya. So best bet is the 751 and hope for the best?

Should I use existing coax first or go ahead and run a shorter run to the main tv? Splitter would likely have to be on the outside of the house as that section has no attic access and is on slab. There is a hole to get one run in already. I could spilt it on the outside and then go into the basement for the other tvs. This would significantly cut down the cable length's from what is there now. Not sure I could use a preamp splitter b/c of lack of ac there.

Thanks again!

I like to recommend a temporary coax for initial setup. Otherwise, you're at the mercy of whatever is installed in the satellite coax system and we get calls about that every day that go like :

Caller: "Hey, I swapped my dish for your antenna and nothing works. What's wrong with your antenna?"

Answer is "Nothing, you didn't remove the satellite-specific hardware that blocks TV signals". [Sugar-coated, of course]

Multi-switches are the usual culprits.

Pre-amplifiers, if used, are remote powered and do not require AC power in the near vicinity (see installation instructions). I'd suggest no amp to start out with. If you elect to use one, pick one that tolerates strong signals.

So best bet is the 751 and hope for the best? Given your family's self imposed limitations, yes.

I would have no problem installing a tripod on a new roof... Just did less than two years ago as a matter of fact. New roofing materials are less likely to be brittle than older material so I have less concern about leaks. I'd also look at a ground mounted mast or tower, or, eave brackets... any reasonable option that would get the antenna(s) clear of trees would be on the table.

The house is only 1500 sf, one story and surrounded by trees. Even where ours are clear the neighbors on all sides have huge trees. It's an old neighborhood so lots of mature trees. The only somewhat clear site line is where the sat already is so I want to use it. I really don't think there would be any other spot that would be better. I'll get up there and take a look but I doubt it.

I'd like all major's but wlos for local news is the most important. And pbs for the kid which is close as well. We have netflix, amazon prime, chromecast & will add hulu plus. I also have a 8tb home server with all our dvd/blueray rips. So we're not going to have any shortage of things to watch ;)

Here are 2 ways to have the antenna higher.
