Newbie needs help getting dialed in

Having trouble with getting things set up. I can get all the channels some of the time, but much of the transmission is interrupted and pixelated.

Any guidance that you can provide would be appreciated. Let me know if I need to just get a different antenna or a pre-amp or whatever. I so want to ditch my cable.

How many sets are or will be connected?

Can you describe the mounting of the antenna? Attic, low roof, high - above roof...?

What direction is the antenna pointing?

Antenna is on the roof of a single story house. Mounted on a pole, which is attached to some pipe/vent that comes up through the roof. Antenna is about six feet from edge of roof. The pole holding the antenna is less than six feet tall. Currently the antenna is pointing 10 degrees.

Is there an amplifier anywhere in the system?

Are any cables, splitters or matching transformers reused from another system?

With your azimuth of 10° you should get WOTV, WXMI, WLLA, WWMT, and WOOD. The others may be impaired due to incorrect aim.

The other problem is the extremely intense signal level of -11.8 dbm from WGVK on channel 5. The best solution is a separate Y5-2-6 antenna for WGKV plus a 20 db attenuator connected to the low band antenna and an HLSJ to combine the two antennas.

If you'd like to try for WGVK with your existing antenna, get two HLSJs and a 20 db attenuator. Feed the antenna into the combined port of one HLSJ, connect the L ports with a short jumper cable, connect the H ports with the 20 db attenuator between them, feed the TV sets with the combined port of the second HLSJ. Use only quad shielded RG-6 for every single cable.

Finally, WZUU FM on 92.5 MHz has a signal strength of -19.7 dbm. The HLSJ trick to deal with WGVK on channel 5 will solve that potential overload problem as well.

Those are the five I am most interested in.

At this time, there are no amplifiers.

I have not added any splitters. I have the line from the roof coming down into the basement and direct to my tv.

The line is brand new RG-6 (I will check for specific type when I get home).

Length of line is 60 ft.

WOOD and WWMT come in crystal clear and with little or no interruption. WOTV and WMXI are the ones I have problems with.

I'd start by buying two HLSJ, one 20 db attenuator, three short RG-6 jumpers, and one 75 ohm terminator. Insert one HLSJ with nothing on the L port and see what happens.

Solid Signal in Novi should have all those items.

I agree that WGVK is an overwhelming signal.

TG, Does the attached drawing match the idea your proposing?

The additional complexity of the UVSJ presumes the HLSJ will attenuate UHF frequencies (which may or may not be the case depending on the filter circuitry inside the HLSJ).

In another forum (http://lwww.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1036829&page=6), the Pico Macom HLSJ is reported to pass UHF. Fortunately, most UVSJs and HLSJs are inexpensive.
