Plan on installing outdoor antenna and using existing Direct tv wiring minus the splitter to one tv.
Will I need an amplifier and what type (on antenna or will at tv location work). Best way to make splice where old spliter is located?

Your best hope for reliable reception is an outdoor mounted antenna or combination of antennas. Given the relatively weak signal levels, you'll need to be prepared to experiment with mounting location and height.

I'd try an Antennas Direct DB8E + Antennacraft Y10713 + RCA TVPRAMP1R. If mounting on the same mast, the UHF antenna will usually do best at the top, and the Y10713 about 4' below. This will call for a more substantial mounting than the satellite system J-pole can provide. Start with the antennas aimed toward the east and fine tune the aim from there.

Feel free to try to reuse the coax left from the satellite system. Any other parts will likely need to be replaced with an OTA splitter or F-81 barrel connector. Seal any exposed connections with Coax-Seal or Scotch 2228. Don't rely on common electrical tape to keep water out... It can be used as a protective overwrap for the mastic type sealing tape though.
