I am looking for advice on an antenna for my attic. Here is what I'm trying to accomplish...
I'd like to be able to watch all the channels within 50 miles. The antenna will be mounted in my attic above the second floor. The coax run is about 30 feet to a generic preamp and then split to drive 3 TVs ( runs up to 40 feet ). My house is surrounded by large trees.
Currently I have rabbit ears in the attic and I can reliably watch everything within 50 miles except for real channels 8 & 49. Channel 8 is what I'm trying to get.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I left off any critical piece of information, please let me know. Thanks.

Attic and Inside of Buildings Are Not a reception friendly environment and Never Will Be a reception friendly environment.
Start the Reliable Reception Process with a , HBU11K antenna in the attic.
http://www.antennacraft.net.
Aim the HBU11K antenna at about 300 degree magnetic compass direction.
Here is how to aim antennas , http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointong/pointing.html.
Use a Real and Actual magnetic compass to aim antenna.
If you have reception issues/problems that are not resolvable with antenna aim and location adjustments in the attic.
Then move the HBU11K antenna to Above the Peak of the Roof in such a manner that reception is not , obstructed , impeded , blocked , buy the , attic , roof , building , in the directions of , North North West , West.
As always , trees and tree leaves , plants and plant leaves , have a Negative Effect on Broadcast Tv Reception and so do buildings and other obstructions including your own roof and building.
Some and not all Negative Effects are.
Absorbing and Blocking Reception.
Multi-Path Reflecting Tv Signals Bouncing All Around.
For Reliable Reception the Best Practice is to install a antenna at a location that has the least amount to no amount of obstructions of any type or kind in the directions of reception including your own , attic , roof , building.
---------------------------
The reception signal strengths are strong in the Green reception zone of the tvfool radar report and channel list.
A antenna system amplifier is not required.
For 1 Tv connected use No splitter.
For 2 Tv's connected use a 2 way splitter.
For 3 Tv's connected use a 3 way splitter.
For 4 Tv's connected use a 4 way splitter.
----------------------------
To keep Weather/Water out of outside coax and connections.
For coax that is outside use the RG-6 coax that has the Compression type connectors on the ends of the coax , not the crimp type connectors on the ends of the coax.
To make double sure that water does not get into coax and connections outside , wrap with , http://www.coaxseal.com.
To keep water out of the matching transformer (balun) that connects the antenna to the coax.
Remove and discard the Rubber Boot that is often supplied with a outside type matching transformer.
Rubber boots take in and hold water at the connections , holding water at outside connections is not good.
To keep weather/water out of the matching transformer , wrap the matching transformer and both ends of matching transformer with coax seal.
---------------------------
Digital Tuners can develop -Digital Glitches- that are not cleared out with simple channel scans.
To clear tuner do Double Rescan.

Here is the Federal Antenna Law that says Yes you can install the antenna above the roof so as to have reliable reception.

Thanks for the information. I mounted a HBU22 antenna in the attic and can now pick up all of the stations within 50 miles. All with strong signals.
I realize than attic mounting is not ideal, but it works well for me. Thanks again.
