Please give advice on what antenna I should get.

We have nothing set up at the moment. The old unidirectional antenna went down with the new porch roof and then fell apart. It wasn't getting all the channels anyway. We could put an antenna on the high 3rd story roof in the summer (attic made into a dormer and strong prairie winds up there, and dangerous to be crawling up there), or maybe on a western roof over the 1st floor porch in summer, which would be preferred, but I'd like to quick set up in side the bedroom of the 3rd floor (attic turned bedroom) until better weather so I can watch the Olympics. The windows face west.

Previously I researched and thought a D8 would be right, but it's been awhile and I've lost the reasoning, and I don't know what other parts would be needed anyway.

Please advise, and thank you in advance for your efforts!

I would opt for a Winegard HD7698P and an RCA TVPRAMP1R preamplifier. Aim just a bit south of due west.

A premium option would be an Antennas Direct DB8e + Antennacraft Y10713 + RCA TVPRAMP1R

Above the roof of the 3 story house will be Ok.

The Tv stations are to the West and East.

The West Tv Stations are Weak signal strengths.

The East Tv station that is your strongest Tv signal is , KTIN , PBS.

For reception in a West Facing Window on the 3rd floor , you can Test reception with a , http://www.channelmasterstore.com CM4228HD , antenna with a , Channel Master 7778 , preamplifier , from Channel Master or from http://www.amazon.com

I recommend the 3 story roof because the first story roof may have the house blocking reception to the East.

Above The Peak of the Roof install the CM4228HD antenna aimed at about 262 degree magnetic compass direction.

Use a Real and Actual magnetic compass to aim antenna.

If the signal on real CH-9 was stronger I could agree with the suggestion of the CM4228. It it may work. If not, a Y10713 could be added (a good reason to opt for the dual input TVPRAMP1R, which is priced better than the CM7778).

Having the antenna in the window is what is driving the recommendation for the CM4228HD antenna.

The weak signal strengths of the UHF channels and 2 Edge Path obstructions in the direction of reception , other then KTIN PBS.

Calls for a big UHF channels 14 thru 51 antenna , the flat upright CM4228HD will fit better in the room and window , then a 10 foot or longer antenna.

The CM4228HD is designed to receive UHF channels 14 thru 51 and VHF channels 7 thru 13.

The VHF reception capability of the CM4228HD antenna has a small amount of signal gain.

So might be required to use a larger VHF high band channels 7 thru 13 antenna. A http://www.antennacraft.net , Y10-7-13 VHF high band antenna.

If the CM4228HD receives KCAU channel 9 reliably in the window.

Then the CM4228HD antenna will most likely receive KCAU channel 9 even better on the roof.

If so then it is only one antenna on the roof , the CM4228HD antenna.

Yes use the , RCA TVPRAMP1R preamplifier , it has combined input for a single UHF/VHF antenna and can be connected separate UHF and VHF antenna inputs.

Do not use the CM7778 preamp.

This antenna is listed on 2 websites with the same picture, but different descriptions.
Amazon says it's 113x95x22 inches, which is almost 10x8 feet. And it says its a 60 mile range.

We'll go for a chimney mount when weather permits. Until then we'll use the attic bedroom that faces west, and room size isn't a problem. So Cm4228HD or DB8e?

And if a bigger antenna is required for VHF channel 9 , the Y10-7-13 can be added.

Trust the Channel Master ad copy over the retailers' info. Don't give much attention to mileage estimates (those are from the marketing department, not the engineering department. If we all lived in flat terrain and had no trees, a mileage estimate standard might be plausible.)
