Not sure why we couldn't get these channels (new antenna?)

We cut cable and are trying to get channels over the air using a set top antenna. We tried a cheap RCA antenna that had the loop plus bunny ears and a fine tuning dial. My husband tried to set it up and said he could only pull in Fox and a handful of random stations. We only need the major networks (NBC, ABC, Fox, CBS).

We're in a single family home, living room is above grade, no second story over it, and the room faces east. Any guidance on a particular set top antenna or how to best position it would be helpful.

A Simple Reception Situation with a Outdoor Antenna.

Many , many , many , many , many , Digital Broadcast Tv stations/channels will be received.

Above the Peak Of The Roof in such a manner that Broadcast Tv reception is not blocked by the roof and house in the directions of , east , south east , south.

Install a ANT751 antenna aimed at about 150 degree magnetic compass direction.

The ANT751 comes with a J pole type antenna mount.

As always , trees and tree leaves , plants and plant leaves , have a Negative effect on Broadcast Tv reception and so buildings including your own roof and house and other obstructions.

The Best Practice is to install the ANT751 antenna at a location that has the least amount to no amount of obstructions of any type or kind in the directions of reception including your own roof and house.

The Tv/s Must Channel Scan for the Digital Broadcast Tv stations/channels , often named the 'Air Channels' or 'Antenna Channels' in the Tv Setup Menu because the Tv transmissions travel through the Air from the transmitting antenna to the receiving antenna.

Some Digital Tv's will Automatic channel scan for cable tv channels.

DO NOT channel scan for cable tv channels.

Go into the Tv Setup Menu and select the 'Air Channels' ~ 'Antenna Channels'.

Scan for channels.

Which is likely the reason that you were only able to pick up a few stations. Most likely, the bulk of the signals are getting blocked by construction materials and other ground clutter.

Best results are obtained by optimal antenna placement. Getting the antenna to a spot where the signals can cleanly get to the antenna will work wonders for reception. Placing the correct antenna in a signal-lousy location usually yields lousy results.

A small roof or attic mounted 7-51 antenna should get your the DC stations.

As a learning Experience , install the ANT751 above the roof as directed.

Then install the ANT751 in the attic.

The locations that provides more reception or less reception , roof or attic , you are free to choose , more or less reception.
